Is a ketogenic diet good for weight loss?

The ketogenic diet, or “keto diet,” is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate weight loss plan. To enter ketosis, this diet substantially reduces carbohydrate intake and increases fat intake.

The ketogenic diet may aid short-term weight loss. Ketogenic dieters lost more weight than low-fat dieters in 13 randomised controlled trials.

The ketogenic diet isn’t for everyone, and it’s hard to stick to. The low-carb diet may cause weariness and weakness in some persons. Saturated fats in the diet may potentially raise heart disease risk.

Here are some studies that looked at how the ketogenic diet helped people slim down:

In 2018, researchers looked examined 13 randomised controlled trials that compared the ketogenic diet to a low-fat diet for weight loss and published their findings in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. The review concluded that the ketogenic diet resulted in much greater weight loss than the low-fat diet.

One study looked at how the ketogenic diet affected weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors in obese adults and was published in the journal Obesity in 2018. The results showed that when compared to a low-fat diet, the weight loss and improvements in various cardiovascular risk factors achieved by following a ketogenic diet were statistically and clinically significant.

The benefits of the ketogenic diet on weight loss and cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight and obese men were the subject of a randomised controlled experiment published in Nutrition & Metabolism in 2009. Weight loss and improvements in various cardiovascular risk variables were found to be much greater on the ketogenic diet than on the low-calorie diet.
